How to Clean Your Interior and Exterior Staircases

How to Clean Your Staircase

Your custom built staircase is an investment which adds style and value to your home or office. Goddard Spiral Stairs recommends developing a cleaning routine that makes maintenance easy and prolongs the beauty of your stairs.

Cleaning Interior Staircases

Interior Wood Staircases:

Wood stairs are naturally durable and beautiful but require a bit more care than metal stairs. First, sweep or vacuum the dust and debris off your wood stairs, starting from the top of your stairs and working your way to the bottom steps.

Once a thorough sweep is complete, wipe down your stairs with a damp sponge. Then, dry off the wood surface immediately with a soft cloth to avoid leaving drips or wet spots that could be absorbed into the wood. How to Clean Your Stairs

Next, apply a mild wood cleaning soap solution, such as Murphy's Oil Soap or Orange Glo. Be sure to choose a cleaner made specifically for hardwood surfaces and follow all the package instructions. Mop or wipe with a damp cloth and dry with a clean soft cloth, and voilà, your staircase is as good as new!

Interior Metal Staircases:

Metal staircases are sleek and stylish, and low maintenance. Begin with a microfiber or disposable dusting cloth to remove pet hair and dust.

For messy fingerprints on the handrails or muddy footprints, try a mild cleaning solution. Fill a spray bottle or bucket with warm water and add a mild dishwashing liquid like Dawn or an all-purpose household cleaner. Avoid using harsh cleaners and furniture polish as they can leave behind chemical residue which may damage the finish.

Cleaning Exterior Staircases

Exterior Wood Staircases:

With proper care, your outdoor wood stairs will be a beautiful and long lasting addition to your backyard. Exposure to the elements naturally causes some wear and tear to your exterior wood staircase, for example, moisture and heat can cause algae growth or mildew. That's why we recommend that you clean your exterior wood staircase once a year.

Start by thoroughly sweeping your stairs and deck. Then, use a pressure washer to remove any dirt and debris that may be stuck in the crevices. If you don't own a pressure washer, check your local home improvement and hardware stores for rentals.

Using a mop or brush, apply a deck cleaning solution. Be sure to read all the instructions and test in a small area before you apply the solution. Once you have thoroughly scrubbed your deck and stairs, use the pressure washer to rinse and give the area 36-48 hours to dry.

Finally, apply a waterproof sealer. Sealer is essential to protect the wood and repel water and will make your staircase resilient for years to come.
