Cleaning Interior Staircases

Wood stairs are naturally durable and beautiful but require a bit more care than metal stairs. First, sweep or vacuum the dust and debris off your wood stairs , starting from the top of your stairs and working your way to the bottom steps.

Once a thorough sweep is complete, wipe down your stairs with a damp sponge. Then, dry off the wood surface immediately with a soft cloth to avoid leaving drips or wet spots that could be absorbed into the wood. How to Clean Your Stairs

Next, apply a mild wood cleaning soap solution, such as Murphy’s Oil Soap or Orange Glo. Be sure to choose a cleaner made specifically for hardwood surfaces and follow all the package instructions. You the customer will need help to unload the staircase and take it to the yard (exterior) or into the house (interior). Our driver is usually capable of helping you with this. Steel staircases are welded into a single unit but can be made in 2 pieces to get it into your home.

Our all wood spiral staircases are disassembled for shipping and usually come in 6 to 10 packages. The pole is 1 piece and the handrail is 1 piece. All wood staircases need to be reassembled on the job site.

Fitting your spiral staircase into your home.

Goddard Steel Spiral Staircases are usually built in 1 piece. Our customers often ask “how do we get them into the house”? A 5’ diameter steel spiral staircase will cork screw through a 36” door that measures at least 34 ½” from jam to jam. You will need to have a straight shot to where the staircase will go. The staircase will not fit down a hall way or through a small entry way getting them into the house. If you have a hall way that is not large enough for the staircase to go through we can build your staircase in 2 sections and bolt them back together using only 7 bolts and screws.

If you are going to put your steel spiral staircase through a hole in the floor, the opening requires a 4” larger hole than the diameter of the staircase. A loft application only requires an area a little larger than the diameter of your staircase.

Our wood spiral staircases are built to your specifications here in our shop, marked and numbered and dis-assembled and shipped to you. You simply remove the pieces from the boxes and put them together. The wood spiral staircases require a finished opening 6” larger than the staircase diameter.

General Instructions for Installing a Goddard All Wood Spiral Staircase

In our last post, we said that wood staircases take longer to install. That’s what we’re going to talk about today.

Your Goddard All Wood Spiral Staircase will come unfinished and unassembled so the first decision you need to make is whether to stain and finish before or after you reassemble the staircase. If you are going to finish the stairs first, you need to tape off any areas that need to be glued together in the building process so that the glue will stick to the raw wood.

The remainder of these instructions is a very basic description on how to install our staircase. Please remember that the opening size for an all wood staircase needs to be 6 inches larger than the diameter of the staircase you order. A loft application needs to have enough room for hand room clearance on and around the lower walls.

Step 1. Bolt the 1st step and base plate to the stair.

Step 2. Anchor the pole vertically.

Step 3. Install the #1 and #2 main balusters.

Step 4. Add the 2nd step.

Step 5. Add the 3rd main baluster.

Step 6. Repeat until all steps are installed.

Step t. Mount center balusters.

Step 8. Mount all wood handrail (already made). Top and Newel Post.

Step 9. Mount the landing to the house framing.

Step 10. Mount the spiral staircase to the landing.

Step 11. Mount and install any extra railing at the top across landing if purchased.

Step 12. You are finished!

Installation of a Goddard Spiral Staircase

Our spiral stairs are already assembled at our factory to your personal specifications. Having the staircase already welded together means that you simply bolt the top landing up to where it goes, set the staircase up to the landing and vice grip the landing to the landing bracket. You will need to drill 4 holes into the landing then use the bolts supplied to bolt them together. Then bolt the base plate and the tabs on the bottom balusters down to the floor. If your stair is all steel you are done. If you have oak treads and or handrail, it comes un-finished. You will need to stain and finish the wood to your satisfaction and use the screws supplied to attach the wood parts to the stair.

At Goddard Spiral Stairs we have several types of interior steps for our spiral staircases.

Our lowest priced step is a step grade particle board, 1 1/8” thick, that is inserted into a pan shaped steel frame. It is made to be easily carpeted.

Next is hard wood, as in Oak. Other hard woods or even pine treads are available.

We also have all steel treads, mostly used in commercial applications.

And last for “spa areas” we can use materials used for exterior staircases like cedar, redwood or composite treads that fit on top of a steel frame.

Types of Treads for Exterior Spiral Staircases

Exterior stairs need to be able to withstand more extreme weather conditions. Our exterior stair package includes exterior paint which is basically 3 times the paint and primer that our interior spiral staircases get.

Exterior spiral staircases also need to be more resistant to moisture and the suns UV rays. The treads we offer are similar to what you would use on an exterior deck: wood (redwood or cedar), pressure treated wood or composite (such as Trex Composite for decks). Composite treads are a little more expensive than the wood treads but we can match your deck color. The composite treads are the most durable.

All metal treads come in a couple of options. Expanded metal treads have a diamond shape hole that lets the rain and snow fall through. Snow can build up but when you walk on it you will push the snow through the holes. Tread plate, or checker plate is also used for its durability.

To save money the customer can buy their own composite and install their composite on our frame. We will send a pattern and directions with a drawing showing how to cut and install the composite.

How We Deliver The Staircases

When you order a spiral from Goddard Spiral Stairs, most of the time it will be a personal delivery. We deliver up to 700 miles from Logan, KS. We take your order over the phone (personally). We go over every detail needed so that your stair fits your application exactly

Our personal delivery truck will bring the stair to you. We will also help you get the stairs into the house, (interior) or help you get it around back to your deck/patio.

We will help you stand the stair up where the stair goes and go over every detail that needs to be discussed on how to mount or install your stair. We do not install the stair for you but after we show you how everything goes, it is only about a 1 hour job.

If you have composite steps, oak treads, oak handrail, they will also need to be attached after the stair is mounted. All wood parts need to be finished by the customer. That way the customer can finish the wood parts to match their home decor.

How to mount your steel spiral on the job site

At Goddard Spiral Stairs., we only build steel spirals already welded up. We do not build kits.

They are built to the customers specs.

That being said, they are very simple to install.

First our drivers (if personally delivered) will help you get the stair to your location where he will explain how to install.

First – Mount the landing with the 4 lag bolts supplied.

2nd – Set the stairs up to the landing (3 to 4 people needed) and clamp the landing and the stair together. 3″ or 4″ C-clamps work best. You’ll need 2 clamps.

3rd – Level the landing & plumb the stairs.

4th – Walk up the stair to drill 4 holes 3/8″ in the landing using the 4 holes in the landing bar as guides.4

Before you climb up the stairs, make sure the C-clamps are tight and always have at least 2 safety people holding on to the stair for additional support and safety.

5th – Bolt the star and landing together using the counter sink 3/8″ bolts supplied.

6th – Bolt the center pole & balusters on the bottom step to your concrete pad or floor.

7th – If you ordered any extra rail for around the top you can install it at this time.

8th – If your stair is all metal you are done. If you ordered wood treads and wood handrail, it will need to be finished. Stain and finish all wood parts and install. Steps are fit at our shop & numbered from bottom to top.
